Here are some helpful hints to care for your handcrafted book, including some of my secret tricks!
ATTACHING PHOTOS OR MEMENTOS If your album has photo sleeves, just slide your favorite photos right in - easy peasy! If your album is scrapbook style, it is best to use a photo-safe adhesive or photo corners to place photos in your album. There are many different kinds to choose from but my favorite kind of adhesive is available here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/65730692/canson-photo-mount-squares
ABOUT YOUR ALBUM PAGES The pages in your photo album or scrapbook are acid- and lignin-free. Most albums contain 100% cotton rag pages for longevity. Jumbo albums (over 11 inches wide) may contain archival sulphite pages.
SUNLIGHT Both paper and book cloth are sensitive to water so it is best to avoid water altogether. While I do not use papers and cloths that I know to have fading issues, some dyes and inks may be sensitive to sunlight and fade over time. To avoid this, please do not display your album in direct sunlight for extended periods.
CLEANING BOOK CLOTH To remove dust and particles from canvas-like book cloth, I recommend using blue painters' tape because of its low tack. Please be careful not to touch the tape to any paper surface.
This method also works fairly well on non-ribbed or non-mohair silk-blends, but make sure you use a very light touch with the tape because you don't want to pull any loose threads out or leave any residue.
Please DO NOT USE TAPE on any ribbed or mohair cloth. Try brushing the dust or particles off with your hand.
RIBBON All ribbon ties leave the studio ironed although I have a feeling they may not always look ironed when they arrive at your door! Ribbon may be ironed on the "synthetic" setting on your iron, no water or steam is necessary.
SMUDGES ON PAGES Although I check album pages for smudges before they leaves the studio, there is always the possibility that I will miss a smudge or two. I have not met a smudge yet that doesn't respond well to a kneaded eraser. Please DO NOT use the eraser on top of your pencil as it will leave even worse marks. I am happy to send you a mini kneaded eraser if there are smudges in your album. Please contact me with your name and address and I'll happily send an eraser as soon as possible.
